Marc Matock

As one of the most heralded athletes to ever come out of Monterey County, there wasn’t much that Marc Matock couldn’t do. Whether on the football field, basketball court or even the track, Marc’s athletic resume is beyond compare.

At Palma High School, Marc earned 4 varsity letters in track and 3 each in football and basketball. His teams won 3 league and CCS titles and 1 Small School “State Team of the Year” honor in football; 1 league, 2 NorCal and 1 State Championship in basketball; and 4 league banners in track. Individually, Marc was named to the All-League and All Monterey County football team 3 times, County Defensive Player of the Year during his senior season and qualified for the prestigious California State Track and Field Meet in the shot put. He remains one of the few athletes from the Salinas Valley to compete and achieve at a high level in three different sports.

While Marc was extremely versatile–the classic 3-sport athlete–he made a name for himself on the gridiron. A heavily recruited defensive lineman, Marc eventually chose USC over schools like Oklahoma and Nebraska. During his time at a Trojan, the track coaches incessantly recruited him to join the track team—an offer he ultimately declined, as he felt that his focus needed to be on football. As a senior in 1998, Marc earned a starting position and became one of the mainstays of the USC defense. That same season, as he battled through an ankle injury, Marc was honored with the Davis-Teschke Award, an honor given to the Trojan football player who best exemplifies leadership, effort, toughness, locker room impact, team spirit and resilience.

As one of the most decorated athletes to graduate from Palma High School, Marc was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2023. To this day, he is regarded as one of the top football players and all-around athletes ever come out of the Salinas Valley.
