John Flannery

​John Flannery, a Salinas High graduate, went from winning the California Interscholastic Federation golf title in high school, to becoming a collegiate All-American at USC, to claiming the California State Championship in 1987, and finally reaching the PGA Tour and qualifying for four US Open tournaments. In 1978 he was on the Junior America’s Cup team. In the same year he was the Charley Culver Junior Masters champion in what was considered one of the major golf events in Salinas. Along the way he won more than 30 Golden State Mini Tour events. He was the leading money winner and Player of the Year on the Ben Hogan Tour in 1992 when he won three of his four Ben Hogan tournaments. Flannery reached the PGA Tour in 1993 and competed in 75 Tour events in his two-year Tour career – qualifying for the US Open in 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1996. He was among the leaders after the first round of the 1992 Open at Pebble Beach, made the cut, and finished 85th. That same year he had the best finish in the five times he competed in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a tie for ninth.  In 1993 he finished 18th in the Hawaiian Open and in 1994 placed 22nd in Las Vegas.
