
Dorothy Middaugh
As the Physical Education Department Chairman at Hartnell College Dorothy Middaugh was the driving force to the growth and development of women’s sports and passage of Title IX, working as a lobbyist in Sacramento. She was the first woman at Hartnell College to coach men’s varsity sports (swimming and diving) and also served as Chairman at the State Physical Education workshops held at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She taught and coached field hockey, softball, basketball, tennis, archery and badminton. She was instrumental in the development and organization of the California Field Hockey Association as well as the Northern California Women’s Basketball Association. In 1988 she was inducted into the California Association of Community College Colleges Sports Hall of Fame and in 2013 went into the Hartnell Sports Hall of Fame. In 2005 she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Hartnell College and was also elected into the Ford California Sports Hall of Fame.
