1974 King City High School Girls Track & Field Team -CCS Champions

The 1974 King City High School girl’s track team not only competed in the first Central Coast Section Track and Field Championship meet in history but finished as co-champions. The Mustangs, who piled up more points than the rest of their league combined at the Mission Trail Athletic League championship meet, shared the CCS title with Menlo Atherton with 19 points. The meet was held at San Jose City College. King City had two individual CCS champions – Sandy Ferreira in the long jump and Kathy Kuchta in the shot put. Ferreira went on to finish second in the high jump at the state meet while Kuchta was fifth in state in 1974 and won the state shot put title the next year. King City’s 440 relay team of Marie Guidici, Debbie Pitcher, Denise Cornell and Ferreira took second at CCS. The top three CCS marks in each event qualified for the state meet, and as a result, King City had two more individuals and a relay team continue on – Carmen Chavez in the mile, Debbie Pitcher in the 80 low hurdles and its 880-medley relay team of Toni Wilson, Marie Guidici, Debbie Pitcher and Denise Cornell.
